birthday -- The unwelcome
news of the surrender of Gen Lee's
army reached us this morn' the
shock was a terrible one -- the only
consolation is that so many preci-
ous lives may be saved -- the
news was received here last eve
and greeted by a salute of 100 guns
at 9 o'clock P.M. another at 12 o'clock
and another at day break -- our
curiosity was much excited to know
what had happened but we knew
it was something, we would not be
to glad to hear. Our old neighbor
Mr Ritter died last night after a
week's illness -- Mr S. is better --
this eve -- Mr Evins spent the eve'
Rained a good deal to day --
